under the current system, if something against the rules is posted in a thread, the thread is closed.

this works great for spam/off topic but in a trade thread alot of the time someone will come in and ruin the thread and it will be closed.

i propose that we give the staff an option to remove offensive posts in a thread and leave it open.

They do have that option. Ever see the "Inappropriate Post Content"?

Closing the thread is really just a time saver to get onto more important things. Any images that are posted that are offensive are usually removed though and the way it is seems to work fine, in my opinion anyway.

They do NOT have the option suggested. They have the option to lock a thread and use "Inappropriate Post Content" as the reason.

I think it's a good idea in certain cases where a person is just being flamed with people spamming his/her thread(s). Just deleting certain posts would be better.

Sure they do.

Example: http://forums.d2jsp.org/index.php?showtopic=14625405&f=52

3rd post and all the others. If something is totally out of order they can remove it (not that that is the reason in my example), but like I said, you're gonna be there a very long time if you wanna go through the entire trade section, or any section for that matter, and remove every flame out there.

Ah, I'd forgotten about that. In which case, it's something that should be utilized more frequently.
