An Auto-private message indicating that you want to be someones friend when you invite them should be sent automatically to the other party, and vis-versa. Yes, no?
The only time you notice is if you happen to go into your friends list and notice someone's added you weeks/months ago.

And what if someone pulls the old hide the friend code in a fake-thread link trick?

I check my profile everyday, its hard not to notice that friends pending thing.

Well there shouldnt be a link sent with the pm. It should be just a basic pm saying that someones added you as a friend and awaiting for you to accept.

Example:
"SalvationDG, Jeubyron has sent you a request to become his friend"

or something

No one has so many actual friends that they need to be informed about that stuff.

and it's not that hard to check your own profile for pending friends.

Also, if someone wants to be your friend, he can pm you himself if he added you.
