The suggestion is pretty simple, so here it is: when we see a forum, we see Open and Closed topics group together. We see it like this for example (someone can PM me gfx to show what I mean and I can add it here lol):

But my idea is to make it look like this instead:

The idea is to re-order how we see topics so that while Open and Closed topics would be sorted by date, the Open topics would be seen first.

Potential Problem: this "bumps" old open topics up a lot.
Potential Solution: make it work day-by-day or month-by-month, based on Last Post. Day-by-day assumes people will Track topics.

PRO: This helps in forums like the trading forums, where closed topics still appear above open topics, and in off-topic forums it might be nice because some of them get ugly.

Thanks for looking at this suggestion. It would involve a big change in how each forum looks, so for that reason I worry that it might be "too big" to be pretty. Thanks for any comment/votes

i like the basic idea of excluding closed topics from the top space.

but i think it would be better if there is a trashbox subforum for closed topics in each trading forum, where illegal (or 60+ replies) topics are moved after closed.
it's just like site suggestions archive vs this subforum.
i've seen trade mods moving wrong place scammer accusations from trading grounds to s/a forum.
i hope they could do the same thing to closed topics.

There is something in your ammendment, but would people be able to see it? If so, it's ugly but it could be shoved to the side. If not, then going back to see them would be rather difficult. You idea is worth considering, depending on how it would be done. For now, I prefer my idea, because it doesn't involve wholesale change.
