It's fairly common these days for site logins opting to use emails instead of usernames ( even if you had to make up a username ) as it is typically much easier to remember your email anyway.
And there's always the problem you don't get the username you desire, so it can be difficult to remember how you improvised. IMO on every site nowadays you should be able to login via username or email.
At least if that was implemented, those users wouldn't be completely wiped from the sites database, their emails would be on record having registered, they would just be nameless / postless etc until a new name is verified.
