As for me this would be very usefull, cuz I keep many donors there (people who mostly willing to donate $$ for fg donations I hold in Donate for me plz Thread).
Every time I have a new donation, I have to check one by one (click > open in new window etc.), who is online and PM him, which is very annoying =(
And if I saw this icon in there: http://forums.d2jsp.org/images/chatOff.png I wouldn't bother myself checking if he is available and would move on.
