It's linked one-directionally, and technically that does make it "backed" in USD's.
And the interesting part is that d2jsp fg itself could actually become powerful as a currency if its backed in other things, in th event of a crisis.
It would be interesting, because it would be the first virtual currency that may actually be used for "real" things (if Paul so allows) based on general use, not just tech like in the RLT.
Like i said, lots of possibilities here. Could strengthen the community 10 fold. Who knows?
lol.
FG is backed by the level of interest the site community has in the things it is used for... that is a certain class of games, some betting and services.
That is the only factor that determines the real worth of fg.
To make fg worth more you have to expand the community using it and the range of services it is used for.
A generic and widely used virtual currency would be very valuable in it's own right. Fg doesn't come near the potential for three reasons:
1- The nucleus community that uses it is small and centered mostly around Diablo 2 fans. There is a much wider gaming community that could benefit from a generic virtual currency, this potential for a virtual currency covering a much larger segment of the entertainment world.
2- It doesn't trade freely. This is a big obstacle because this virtual currency should be able to rise and fall as the entertainment market that this currency is used for rises and falls.
3- Most games aren't designed with a convenient way to link their in game economies to outside economies.
