There are many flood control on the site to avoid this, like search on market, or search in forums.
I think to query a list with ~300-500 users everytime when someone press it, would cause a huge slow-down.
Well, since querying a list with all the users browsing the forums or who is online throughout the site is available, I doubt this would cause a site load issue.
Of course, if this causes a site load issue, then the idea will not be fulfilled, but let's leave it to Paul to decide whether or not it will
