I think we should be able to check a box in our profile settings and un-check if we would like to go anonymous or not, instead of having to log out and then log back in.

Yes if it's possible. I always thought it was mandatory to log out for it to show, but if it's possible, then yes!

Anonymous user here just means that you don't show up in the "x User(s) are reading this topic" thing.
It should never happen that you actually can hide whether you're online or not, or even post anonymously.

I support this suggestion, sometimes I wish to turn it on/off but am too lazy to logout/login.
