In my opinion quoting in that small area would just cause proportion issues, and it wouldnt look apealing to the eye.
You can always directly reference someone, for example:

Impenetrable: Hey how are you doing?


My post would be:
Hey how is everyone here?
@Impenetrable - Im doing great thanks, how about yourself?



I love quoting, multi quoting, etc - But in that small area, I just don't see it being acceptable.
Though if size constraints are fixed\negotiated, this has the potential to be added, in my opinion.
