does this ever feel like a scam? leaving money sitting in a checking account to avoid fees on the account or on some credit card with rewards?

My checking account fee is based on my savings account. Also, any CC that I don't regularly use, I close after spending all points of course. I have two 0% APR credit cards that will be paid in full and closed on the last 0% APR statement.

It's normal if you bank with a stock based company like Wels Fargo, Us Bank, etc. That and bogus fees and unauthorized account openings.

Bank with a Mutual or Credit Union and you'll be way happier. My mutual bank and credit union always has the best loan rates too from my experience.
