This explanation will probably give someone with blockchain knowledge cancer but...here goes
Basically you buy bitcoin/litecoin/ethereum on an exchange, you can send it to other exchanges where you can trade them in for shitcoins. Most of the coins are used for technology purposes (all this shit goes over my head) but some have real world uses.

Examples i can think of is ripple being usable for Uber rides, marijuana coins can be used as a work around for bankers refusing to deposit usd from recreational businesses, and some can even fund jihadis (iota)
Its hard to guess which coins are temporary. I usually look at trade volume and buy/sell order sizes
