"Leaves me roughly a couple hundred bucks a month for everything else. Entertainment, shopping, fun etc."

There is your answer out of debt.

I understand how this is an easy target to get my debt under control.

As easy as it may be to theoretically say, just dont spend money on anything thats not life and death? - But I'd have an unhealthy social life etc if I became a hermit and refused to eat anything but Instant ramen and drink tap water.

Just saying, I'm not a perfect human and I believe I'm living on the pretty minimal side of things for myself outside of the essentials.

I appreciate the comment, but much harder said than done. I don't have tattoos, piercings, don't go to concerts, don't drink excessively, stopped smoking few months ago. If I am going out with friends or hanging out with family, I'm not going to NOT offer to buy buddy a beer or if they want a coffee when I'm on my way over etc.

Not willing to sacrifice some of the minimal pleasures. There has been some awesome advice on here.

I have indeed cut down significantly on the "Fun" spending. The main culprit left is fast food. Or frozen foods etc. The easy convenient food. Otherwise I've done pretty well I think.

It's not so black and white.

Strongly disagree with this. Life is for living. Being a hermit with zero hobbies and never spending money on yourself is a great way to want to shoot yourself.

It'd be better to add income with another job like Uber than to cut out a couple hundred in spending a month if it gets him through

I just have to say wow and thank you so much for all the information and advice.

Taking a few of these terms to the bank meeting next week going to try and get that Credit card debt amalgamated into my consolidated loan. and avoid using the CC as best I can...

The gym membership was an expense that can be spared, I know my routine and can do most without the gym - it was convenient, and didn't attribute too much thought to it being a drain. But 80 bucks a month adds up.

Selling my Car I may look into, at least worth the thought or asking the question see what kinda realistic value it can get me these days.
It being fully paid off makes me hesitant to downgrade because it is still relatively new, (2015 in good shape, bought new), and have heard conflicting advice - Sell and use the money towards other more urgent bills, as well as not sell, and try harder with other methods. Downgrading to an older or "Shittier" for lack of a better word opens me to potential breaks or maintenance etc. Have been told I shouldn't need to worry about any real major repairs or replacement in my vehicle for some time. Will think about this one some more.

2nd side job is being looked into right now - Have tried to apply for jobs like doordash or skipthedishes, etc, but usually full and not hiring in my area.
I have a minor nursing degree and am looking into part-time or casual care work for nights or weekends, I have experience here and a good option to find more shifts without getting in the way of the ol' 8-5

I can very well get better with my food budget. I know it is my weakness and could solve a lot on its own. Have to say it's a pure willpower issue that I need to kick myself in the ass for.

Tons of other food for thought in here just wanna say thanks again.... I'll be sure to update with progress or if things start looking up.

Cheers all

What does "a minor nursing degree" mean? You may be able to massively improve your income situation by looking for a job in a larger area with a lot of demand for healthcare workers.

Hes Canadian I believe, although I dont know what that means here either... In Canada nurses are typically designated as LPN's (2 year program through community college). RN's (4 year university program) and finally NP (6 years of university I believe).

If you're an LPN and would be willing to relocate you could immediately pay off all debts by simply going to the NWT, Yukon or Nunavut. I didn't even touch that since most people are unwilling to relocate, let alone to one of Canada's Territories.

With all that said you should be easily able to pick up overtime hours at this time sanitizing, room preparation, etc at this time. Is that not an option? It does not take long to pay off 4.5K if you start earning hours at 1.5X on a regular basis.

Hey guys,

When I mentioned my minor nursing degree, I may have misspoken. I have certification as a nurse's aide and have half the schooling credentials for my LPN - last year of that training has been on pause since Covid.
I can and have worked as a health care aide in hospitals, a Support worker in care homes and group homes, Have all my checks and vaccines, etc etc etc - Can work with Children and the elderly and can also do respite care and travel for home visits.

I am on a casual call list for 3 group homes(Same Company) in my area, but in my small town in Canada, there are only so many pick-up shifts there. I've picked up roughly 6-10 12 hour shifts in the past few months.

I have not really looked into what else I am able to do or what is available to do casually on the side with my credentials. I should do a little research...

I initially applied for a few jobs at the beginning of the Pandemic and I was working in my current desk job as a contractor for tax season for March/April.
I was not getting a call back about the hospital job and the tax office offered me full-time employment ( That's where I'm still at now, stable safe 8-5 Job ) So I took it no questions asked.

Been difficult admittingly to work so much on the side, even tho I'm at a desk all day, this has been one of the more tiring and challenging jobs I've done.

I have not even entertained the thought of moving to look for better work - Just never crossed my mind as I can't think how I could afford to move and find new appt or afford to go without work for a bit of time. I will look more into what is available out there tho.

Thanks again all. Tough thing this is.

I understand that perspective. I am very much a "just do it" personality when it comes to myself. For example, I buckled down after graduate school and had all my student loans paid off within 11 months of applying all discretionary spending to them. While his timeframe is likely 2.5-4 years of paying down debt with discretionary spending; doing so for 6-12 months would make a large impact.

At the end of the day, one must ask themself... if you have made no progress in two years what are you willing to cut to improve the situation.

live within your means. if you only make 35k a year, then you need to live very minimally and cheap. buy a cheap reliable honda/toyota those last a long time. Your rent is too high honestly 1500 a month? try paying $1000 a month even if its smaller.

His rent is 700. 1,500 is everything.
