~5k in my checking

My wife and I's work both have short-term and long-term disability, and we have very good medical insurance, and working at a university means the firing process has to take at least 6 months.

With cash as cheap as it is, and how insured I am against losing income and against large medical bills, I am comfortable having a relatively small cushion.

tbh, if you get an offer from a bank that your preapproved for credit, take it and use it rarely.

good for emergencies + harder to get when you go to the bank asking.

Don't really have a dedicated 'emergency fund'.

I feel like this concept is for people that are fairly bad with money and basically need some sort of framework to adhere to.

Have like 10k in checking rest in brokerage accounts.

We have ~10k in available credit if we need more.

As our potential well of expenses gets larger, like once we buy a home, we will add more to our emergency fund. If we end up moving our and keeping our home for rental, which is in our current 10 year plan, we'll vastly increase our cash on hand.
