I've got a bit of money I want to invest just sitting in my bank and I want to invest in either bitcoin/ethereum.

I'm looking at an app to purchase and store on my phone, but I don't think that's entirely safe to do, I've heard of people using external devices with ~18 digit codes (and even if you lose the device you can still get back your cryptocurrencies via some passwords or something)

Just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction for this.

A $1,000 USD investment in bitcoin during its release would be worth $35,000,000 USD today

It's best not to invest in Bitcoin now, it's exchange rate is immensely volatile compared to any physical currency. In addition, the number of other cryptocurrencies that have been developed recently with even greater security than bitcoin such as Monero means that the relative worth of bitcoin might decrease in the future. It'll certainly hold less of the cryptocurrency market share as more are developed, and the market is pretty saturated with investors now already.

As for alternative investments, depends on how much money you've got to invest.
