just curious as i browse the sub a lot and i'm curious if people also have a tax sheltered IRA to go along with the stocks they're buying/selling.

i would go into options but i hope most here dont play too heavily with leverage ala WSB.

For retirements accounts: exclusively ETFs/indexing; I don't want to touch these at all once i bought something, rather not hold individual stocks but just let long term market growth do its thing

Active managed: Mix of stock/etfs but leaning heavier into the latter. I work in private side banking and it's incredibly hard to buy/sale individual equities so have to basically keep buying diversified etfs. Only bought one stock in the last year, being Tesla.

Even without work restriction IMO it's better to be mostly in some market cap weighted ETF's. People seriously over estimate their own abilities to pick individual stocks and should mostly stick to overall market performance. It's still good to buy some individual stocks here and there as a hobby or whatever, but IMO ETF/indexing should be a bigger part of the portfolio.

yeah im very similar. vanguard total stock market index roth ira. then have a crypto play around portfolio.

i just worry reading this sub that many dont have any Roth wide based account. they might do ok actively managing it long term but will lose to the market and spend a lot of energy just to lose out on possible gains.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with individual holdings/active managed is they sell too soon. It's instinctive, stock goes up a lot, we want to cash in and pocket the chips. But a lot of the times those end up being some of the biggest winners. I had Nvidia before split in the 300s and sold for like 30% gains, only for it to 4x and basically be worth >$1000.

I think the longer someone has been investing, there's wisdom that comes from just holding and not being in and out all the time. Now rather go buy a semiconductor etf because long term i think it's a good investment and not worry about the 10-20% drawdowns here and there, because my time horizon is decades not months.

95% in ETF so ill just go with ETF only at that %. The rest is negligible, amounts to appease my need to sometimes think i'm more intelligent than I actually am.

of the ETFs 90% is total US market. VUN.

Deviation or taking unnecessary risks for a higher return is not needed to achieve the end goal though. That's also helped me become more tame opver the years.
