I'd probably go a2 Merc with Templars and pride runeword. You get might, concentration and defiance will that.

Or possibly a1 merc with Templars might and brand for amp damage. So you'd get might, vigor and amp damage with that. Also may survive better since it might stay out of Uber meph lighting a bit better?

For rest of gear is probably just stack fire/light absorb and res as much as possible. Also need cbf

I think he's good for a lot of classes because he already has might and you can give him beast runeword for fanaticism. But since you'll already have fanaticism I think a different Merc would suit a smiter better.
