Was thinking of giving this mod a try, to have a backup mod to fall back on late at night or when my buddies aren't online on PD. Was wondering:

1) Does it have it's own private servers, or will I be playing on open Bnet with my fingers crossed someone else is playing as well?

2) Is the additional content all in Hell diff post-Baal or will I get to see some of it as I'm playing through norm and nm?

3) What's a good character to start off with?

Yes it has its own server. To my knowledge the population is huge. Can't advise on a character but my understanding is it's almost an overhaul at this point so you'll experience new content from the off.

its like pd2 on steriods ;) there is a lot of changes. For example, a frost sorceress can have little ice minions ;)

1) Yes

2) No, you will see difference as soon as you are in the rogue's camp. most of the quests are the same as vanilla but this is just the early game.
In norm you have a level challenge that will appear on the 5th wave of baal. this will net you your first unique charm.
In NM you hav another level challenge upon mephisto death. you will get your class charm + a free bonus skill slot available at lvl 90.
Hell baal is an uber of lvl 120, and quite not the easiast one of them :D so you have a lot of work before being able to take on him (depending your build ofc, some do fine but as summoner he is impossible for example)

3) Fire sorc is a top build for sure. I'm playing it and just died once before reaching hell which is insane considering I played solo self found drops.
It can clear the whole content of the game without absurdly rare gear.
But you can literally go any class to start, norm and nightmare are very easy, will grants you enough exp to be 100-105 without even re-running anything
But things will gets harder only from hell with ubers and others areas.

Also a new thing for HC players, now when you die instead of losing everything your char is moved to SC.

Before starting a character, ask yourself what you want from it.
Do you want a character that will clear bosses and farm charms/fragments from bosses,
or do you want character that will farm high density high level areas for Super Sacred Uniques, Xis runes etc? (eg Duncraig, Fauztville, Torajan Jungle)

I haven't tried many builds, but I tried:
Summoner Barb, amazing for solo gameplay as it clears pretty well. Gets boring as you're doing nothing but spaming summons that are both your damage and your meat shield.
Melee Nec, amazing for clearing areas such as Fauztville
Wolf druid, same like melee nec but has a messy animation in which every spell cast (teleports on target and spawns 1000 ravens that kill everything on screen) skips an animation frame and gives u 0.1 second of nasty black screen. Dno if they patched it.
Bowzon, absolutely my favorite char. Debatable #1 farming character, and with some safe gameplay it can possibly clear every boss ingame too. Squishy at start, but becomes a fkn beast late game.
Maelstorm assassin, similar to bowzon. Better survivability but less damage. Maelstorm is like vanilla d2's multiple shot that casts in all directions.

There are some builds like poison barb which seem to be quite effective with cheap eq. Haven't tried it myself but I think did so he can give you an input on that one

To be honest, Median is by far my favorite mod, as it gives so much new content u feel like you're playing a new game which is dope af.
Sadly, I'm so busy with real life for past few months that I barely have any time to play it.

Educate yourself on Shrines and throw the ones you don't need.
x1 Shrine = x1 Craft
You can make Shrines into Vessels. 1 Vessel can keep 20 Shrines if I'm not wrong
So Vessel (2 slots in inventory) = 200 crafts

some people hate crafting but it's an essential thing to do if you want to progress better and be stronger as craft items are end game options on most chars

Here's my bow crafts for example.

Poison throw barb has been nerfed, looks like now Windform barb (ww barb) is the absolute best build for farming at least. I have kinda put him into retirement since fire sorc is so much better.
Don't throw any shrines :p all are useful and idk if there is a limit to store them into vessels, but it is over 50 for sure.

I see a lot of psionic storm assa's, trinity paladins and caster druids. but the leader nerd of the ladder is a nec haha
