I threw in 200 crystals, 300 fame and some ~$40 lol we got it there eventually.
I got lvl 60 so it was worth it.

Im plannig just to battle and upgrading my house atm. Di i still bother upgrading the workshop stuff? Keep everything in the house even level.

personal choice, i guess
if you stop upgrading them, at some point the building duration for other itmes will be much higher and then its very tempting to just upgrade them as well
