Almost 3 weeks ago I showed my girlfriend Warframe. Since then, she has gotten to MR9. I asked her a series of questions about how she wanted to play the game, and from there I recommended what she should work towards next. I keep putting forth a new goal of something she might find interesting, and explain why she has to keep leveling random weapons and deleting them for mastery (I told her she cant buy plat unless she gets 75% off, so slots are tight). I showed her how to trade in the chat, the relay, and warframe.market (she only uses warframe.market now). She has been exploring the game at her own pace and having a blast.
The key things I've noticed about the entire experience are:
-Always do Aura mod and Nitain alerts. Ask in recruiting for a taxi to the alert if you cannot go there yourself. Someone is always willing to take you there if you ask (trust me, you need them very badly).
-Experiment with new weapons often. Even if it doesn't fit your play style right now, you might be pleasantly surprised.
-Mods are more important that a fancy weapon, with the right mods, any weapon can be amazing.
-Learn about void fissures. Hunting down prime parts can get you some sweet loot, can be traded to the void trader at MR8, and can be traded to other players for sweet. sweet platinum.
-A ton of information in Warframe is not presented to you in game, and must be found on outside sources (such as warframe wiki or steam guides), or found through various methods throughout play. If ever you get curious, google and region chat are your friends. Consult them often.
When you get an idea as to what you enjoy, send me a pm, and I can try to suggest goals and items/frames that you might want to play with. (my girlfriend just finished her Ivara, which has become her new favorite frame). As Ownii suggested, kill bosses a few times to get the base versions of most warframes to test their abilities and see which ones you want the prime version for. Some prime versions are almost exclusively cosmetic, while some boast stronger stats, faster speeds, more armor, better shields, etc. When looking for the prime versions, remember that Warframe is on a rotation schedule, so old primes are no longer on drop tables, or their relics are not on the drop tables. These frames or weapons will be much more costly to acquire.
Hopefully this was of some help, if you need any other questions answered, feel free to message me, or when you decide you are ready to trade, I will be here with many glorious items to sell.
Good luck and happy hunting Tenno!
