Newbie question:

I offer BIN bids on items and sometimes dont receive a response from the seller.

How long should I wait for a response from the before I retract the bid and go looking somewhere else?

You have the right to not purchase the item at any point before the exchange so if you find it quicker somewhere else you can just edit out your bid at any time.

thank you!

Is there a particular best way to say it?

Just post the words "retracted" or should I say more?

I want to be polite etc.

Most say “I offer xx fg to bin,” or when placing an offer just mention that it’s valid for 24 hours or whatever timeframe feels best for you.

If you bid on an item and the seller keeps bumping, I usually give it 24 hours and post again to see if they’re willing to close on my offer if there are no other bids.

thank you, but its too late for me to say that, in this latest case.

Would it be OK then, to wait for say 48 more hours, and if seller has still not responded, then just post the words "retracted" and leave it at that? Would that leave me free to pursue other trades?

Its all relative.

Posting a bin offer day 1 of d2r ladder reset would get all of ten minutes of me waiting for a response. Slower paced markets you could adjust accordingly.

Posting retracted is a courtesy, it's on the seller to be prompt regardless.

Yep. Just quote yourself and say "retract." and call it a day.

Any user - buyer or seller - can back out of a deal at any time (as long as trade has not already completed). It may be considered BM - especially as a seller agreeing to a price then changing their mind because someone else offers higher - but it is not illegal or considered a scam.

Typically earlier in the ladder offers seem to be valid for less time rather than in non ladder or late in the ladder season which makes sense because prices are very volatile at the beginning of a ladder

You are not obligated to do anything.
You can leave your offer there if you want.
You have complete control over your sales here.
You can say no, you can say yes. No one can force you to buy their item.
