I’ve been playing Diablo 2 for a few days now, and I expected it to be more active, especially since there are no more realms (or are there?). Every time I try to join a public game, I only see about four available, most of which are hosted by item shops. If I’m lucky, there might be one Trist run game.

Are my settings wrong, or is this just how D2 is these days?

You can try to login on different servers (EU/NA/KR).
You can try to play a different gamemode (Ladder Softcore or Hardcore)
You can use search function on d2jsp to search for communities or active guilds.

I hope this helps a bit to give you a better game experience.

Hmm, okay! I’ll check that out when I get home. But is it normal to only see around 4 or 5 public games now? Back in the day, there used to be tons of games like “Act 1 Start,” etc.

There's some really good communities that are active, the guild opd2gm on JSP has one of the biggest d2 communities I've seen. So far everyone from that guild has been incredibly helpful and accommodating. Diablo has always been a cult classic. It's not an MMORPG, but an ARPG. Starting a fresh season on Launch day and preparing a week or so beforehand will land you into a solid community. People tend to turtle once they get into their clique and the season begins.
