So generally when a topic has comments that you haven't seen yet, the grey box to the left of the topic title would be light grey, and dark grey if you're caught up.

Any reason as to why in certain sections, every topic is dark grey no matter what? I haven't been to the Graphic Design section in months, yet a comment from 6 days ago is being shown as read, along with every other topic.

I think its so:
Darkgrey = closed/0 replys
Lightgrey = more than 0 replys (1,2 or more)
Red = much replys (idk the breakpoint but think of 100 replys??)

Has nothing to do with read/unread or?

It does have to do with read/unread replies. If there is a new comment that I haven't seen, it would be light grey. It would turn dark grey only after I view the topic.

I'm kinda thinking that but not certain. Also not sure why it would be that way instead of just acting like any other normal thread.
