I came across this penny. It looks like there’s an error on the date
I’ve been staring at it for a while now, and I’m unsure if it’s a mistake or there’s just a scratch next to the 1 in 1996

Could be a D error penny, look it up. Seen ranges on prices if indeed that is a d vs a scratch
E: There are a range of errors, mistrikes, D placements, so have to try to be precise in your search. Even the color and placement can add value (or decrease) depending on rarity marks in comparison to others already out there. Best of luck 🤞!

They only use upper case letters, not lower case.
It could possibly be the letter c overlapping the number 1?

Also a question to ask.

But I don't know any mint that uses a C has a stamp. I have a few guides I am looking at, but also any collector would want an error of any sort imo.
Edit: Curious to know if that c is similar to the c in cent on the back

I was also thinking could it be a P mint error stamp?

Philadelphia.
E2: I am multitasking and said something embarrassing, however that is a good point. The mint marks I believe are usually under the date, so of it was upside down its kinda on the correct area. Hold onto it
