You are allowed to trade items for items. Most people want to trade items for fg as item values change/decrease almost daily so it's better to use fg, but you are more than welcome to request items in exchange for other items.

Nope, trading items for other items or service is not frowned upon, the terminology we commonly use around here for exchanging items for items is "VS" (versus) here so if you want to trade let's say a Ber rune for a COA then you may create a topic and title it "Ber rune VS CTA" or you may offer that in someone else's topic, you may apply that term for fg trades as well such as "500 fg vs Ber".

some games I strictly only do item vs item trades for games that have strict rules about 3rd party sites like d2jsp. Most games will ban you for d2jsp service if they catch you
