Not sure where to place this question but hoping someone here can help me.

I bought a laptop from an airport auction. Items that are lost and not recovered for over a year get sent to auction to clear out the lost and found.
This laptop seemed like an okay laptop to use while on the go so I grabbed it from the auction.

I formatted the drives, reinstalled windows and had it up and working. I was doing some windows updates to get everything up to date from the fresh install and when it rebooted I get a message on the screen..

"If this laptop is found, please contact (INSERT COMPANY LAPTOP USED TO BELONG TO) IT help desk (XXX) xxx-xxxx.

Tried calling the company, they want the laptop back and said TSA would have to reimburse me. I dont want to deal with TSA or this company. Is there a way to completely wipe their controls off?

I probably know the auction you were on lol.. I deal with things like this on the regular but do not take my info as legal advice.

The lost item is the responsibility of the employee who lost it. If the laptop was not claimed in the proper time per airport regs, the item is legally released and resold. Just like how abandoned cars are left behind and resold. Theyre not the property of the original owner anymore. If I were you. I'd have this airport reg info readily available if things got stupid but, I doubt it will.

You can try removing the cmos battery on the inside of the laptop. You may have to get to a troublesome part of the laptop to do it but, it should remove any stored data on the bios itself.

If this issue is an ssd bit locker prob, I got plenty of ssds I'm about to list for sale :-)

Purchasing stolen property from a 3rd party doesn't exempt you. You are in possession of stolen property. If you don't wish to return it I'd suggest speaking with legal council to understand your rights.

Can you find this logo anywhere on that laptop? If so, ask the TSA for a refund. If they refuse, file a police report against TSA or whoever manages their auctions.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/security/hardware/hardware-security-overview.html

Edit: I didn't see it was a BitLocker issue. You could go into BIOS settings and disable TPM and Bitlocker. Save the changes. As for the drives themselves, you could DoD 5520.22-M wipe them the drives. Alternatively, you could run diskpart and wipe all partitions (it will show hidden ones too). Just don't use diskpart on the drive windows is running on. haha. Then reinstall. However, you called that IT departments phone number like an idiot and now they know who you are and where you are. They can simply call law-enforcement and give them your address. Also, TSA could just say all sales are final and then you're responsible.

I doubt from a legal standpoint as long as he returns the laptop it is fine.
I can't imagine he could be held at fault for receiving stolen property either because it was as stated that he purchased it from an auction they have monthly from the airports lost & found.

My suggestion to OP is to obviously return the laptop to TSA so they can reimburse him thus reimbursing the company their lost laptop (like TSA should have done in the first place).

Truthfully I would return it to the TSA etc... but you could just buy another SSD for inside and reinstall windows so Bitlocker isn't activated for lost device. But you decide what you wanna do bud.

First off. I got removed from SA because of the past that is tied behind IHPK guild and the choices that members and leaders made that I was aware of as the Owner due to the fact that I blame others and didn't accept responsibility solely. Fact is people change and this was years ago I am not that person anymore.

In terms of SA I did what was required of me and did a great job at it. I dont see why your even posting here...

So kindly please stop talking about it. Lesson learned.

You are correct due to the choices I made over a decade ago I likely will never earn a Trusted Tag and I've accepted that outcome. Because while you trolls continue to flame and bash I have my circle of friends and you have yours. Let's stay in our circles and stop this shit show from 20 years ago.
