i opened it up and it smells fine

i just hate to throw out potentially safe food but not gonna risk getting sick :(

for most cases i would say trust your senses but i cant give any definite answer on this of course. i have done this plenty of times and most companies are rather safe than sorry with the date they put on their products. if you dont feel comfortable with it throw it away but chances are its still good :)
if the can isnt bloated, it doesnt have a use by date and it smells and tastes fine you are probably good to go.
edit: just dont use these for children and people with preexisting GI-illnesses

Most hot sauces are fermented and full of salt, have a low pH and most if not all commercially available hot sauces are pasteurized. As a result they are highly shelf stable, even at room temperature. If unopened it is probably still okay to eat but personally I wouldn't take the chance.

Like you, I hate the idea of throwing out food but as the old saying goes ‘when in doubt, throw it out’. It’s not worth spending a day on the bathroom floor to save a dollar or two.

Rule of thumb,

I strongly advise again consuming anything that's a year over the expiry date, especially when the content is liquid.

With that saids General Chat is probably the more appropriate subforum for a topic like this, since the nature of your topic is more of a discussion.

Peace!

Expiration dates are generally there for stores and restaurants to pull an item off the shelves by a certain date. You will even find expiration dates on canned items, which for the most part are non-perishable. If the seal is intact, and has not been opened, you should be fine. If you feel it’s questionable, then just toss it. There are so many preservatives packed into canned/jarred items that they last far behind their expiration date.
