Yeah that has been my experience, honestly.
Suggesting Ladder Slasher as a way to make FG just because you CAN make FG is somewhat dishonest. That's like suggesting playing the lotto because you can become a millionaire from it, or cherry-picking a situation or someone who got insanely lucky to justify something. Odds of finding an item worth anything are incredibly small (at least on HC).
I actually make negative FG from Ladder Slasher, due to having to maintain the Vault, and I'm solo exploring all the time (when I'm active, that is). Sure, I could just decide to not use it, but then it'd be a massive hassle more than anything, and I still wouldn't make much. Yes, I suppose I could make a profit, albeit little even, by playing 10+ hours every day. I probably make 20-30 FG per climb, which takes hours with average gear, and that's from selling 35+ white items. The last time I found anything of value that isn't a white was 9 climbs ago, and that was a +15 life regen armor, which is probably worth under 20 FG. I'm not expecting to find godly gear every other climb, though, and I'm fine with that. I must have done over 150 solo explore climbs (which isn't much compared to many others, but still) and I don't recall having found anything worth over 100 nerd coins other than perhaps two level 20-25 EE medium armors. I'm not complaining, I'm just stating how it is. I just don't want to be disingenuous and mislead you like some others may. Fanboys will cope and cherry-pick scenarios and/or say I'm saying shit, though, so feel free to not trust me. But that's my legitimate experience with the game. The market could be better on SC, who knows.
I'm not saying you shouldn't play it. I'm not saying you can't make FG from it. I'm just saying that "Play le Ladder Slasher to become rich!!1!" appears to be a meme around here whenever someone asks for ways to make FG.
I'm having fun playing the game, though. You should try it out, just don't expect to make bank really. If you're only looking for a game to make FG, as you mentioned, I can't recommend this.

The biggest problem that people misrepresent is LS isn’t a get rich quick scheme, you have to know something about the game which takes some patience. With patience you learn prices, tips, methods of making fg, climbing faster, ect.

This was my first month playing and what I spent to start. This month is already double that and will easily triple/quadruple.
But again takes some learning, like any game.
