i've followed all the directions - but it still just appears as a link?

To get the direct image URL, click the three dot's at the top right corner of the image, click on share links, copy the BBCode (Forums) link. Alternatively, just right-click the image after uploading and copy the link from the menu that pops up. You can recognize the direct image URL by the file extension at the end (.jpg, .png,...)

so you have to upload each photo individually into imgur and then pull the share links individually?

Yes, you can't embed a gallery / an album in a post here.

Get the individual links to each image, or combine them in a single image before even uploading them. There is a limit on how many images you can embed in a single post ( 3 standard, 5 as site customer, 10 as verified member ).
