My extender doesn’t read the 5 ghz only 2.4ghz. Is it because of distance?

could be, 2.4GHz has longer effective range and better penetration than 5GHz

now how negligible this is for your case, i'm not sure

can try to simply move your router to improve signal distribution

btw, unless you need more than 150mbps~, 2.4ghz is still ok (assuming you're not getting any crazy interference)

5ghz is shorter range but higher throughput. unless the upstairs floor is made of 6in concrete you should be good on 5ghz. 2.4 goes further but lower throughput as chocolate mentioned. 24mbps is around 180MB/s which is decent. You have to take into consideration your wifi router as well. if you have a low end one you may max out at 150 MB/s

It also depends on your modem router, say Comcast, if you use your shit you throttle yourself. If you buy your own you get way better output. Also save money renting once they pay for themselves

I got 159 mbps download downstairs using original Wi-Fi but 20 to 24 mbps download upstairs using the extender. It also could t find 5 ghz when I set it up. We use frontier.

First of all, what router do you use, what extender ?
Extenders usually connects to your current network and extend your current connections, no matter the 2.4 GHz or 5 Ghz. Some extenders use a network cable connection (best to extend your wifi connection) or extenders that use the current wifi signal and increase the area coverage, but this option its not good if your extender isn't compatible with your router.
