or i should rather say if the video card is super old, they don't support higher resolutions. But if its a newer computer, then that wouldn't be it.

What kind of monitor is it.

Test it on a computer you know it should work with and see if the monitor works.

this happened with one of my comps , it was a memory problem. :\
