i just heard from my friend that dota creators released a game of their own without using warcraft as the base gaming system.

No, you don't trade. There's masteries (like WoW talent trees) and runes that allow you to customize to your play style.

I love LoL and hated dota, confuses me as well, it's fun as shit I rarely play d2 anymore because of it.

LoL = weeks without sleep.

You get mastery points and rune slots when you level up, the masteries and runes let you have some overall builds so there's some customization outside of the game itself.

Runes are bought with IP you get from playing games, and you get 1 mastery point per level.
