I haven't played engi since the old hellgate but for strikes it's pretty simple: max them all and/or get +skill 1hand guns so that you have all maxed skills, load up on crit (because supposedly engineers can do crit dmg on strikes) and splash damage, and then go farm exp in stonehenge
~edit: as far as uniques to level fast there are lots of unique low level guns like lamberts etc. I like the rattler (forget what level its at) and jung's windstorm (mostly because jungs has +run speed) I upgraded (nanoforge) those as I used them all the way to lvl 43 when I switched to Hu's.
