i just saw it going down, but today is my first day playing, how long does it usually take?

Typically anywhere from 1-3 hours. However, they said for this particular maintenance:

"We'll be having an emergency server maintenance today up to 2am game tim (EDT). "

So expect it to be up within the next 20 mins or so.
