Your problem may be Vista, but not the way you think. Vista is a RAM hog. There are TONS of processes that Vista runs that you simply don't need. Try looking through them and closing ones that you aren't using, or don't use, or that simply aren't necessary. If you know jack diddly about computers, try going to
http://www.pcpitstop.com/ and run the test for "Running Programs" or something similar to that. It will list all the non-system processes currently running, and will tell you what they are, and if you can turn them off. There is also a Full Test that you can run to get more efficiency out of your computer.
vista doesn't "hog" ram it just uses it more efficiently than xp does.
at any point in time when your using xp most of your ram won't be in use and not benefiting you, but in vista programs are prechached so moving between them is much easier, games also load much faster in vista. If you want more speed then more ram needs to be used.
also don't just go turning stuff off if you don't know what it does.
