And if so... whats the point of a CS pet? to pick up only my items. Also, if gpotato doesn't want me picking up other peoples stuff with a CS pet then why not just disable picking up other people's stuff with a pet?

well yes and no
if the person does not want the items and they're just lying on the ground and the person doesn't seem to be near the items or have moved on then they are no longer that persons items, who ever wants them can take.
it's not really like if some people are beside you leveling and you have a pet and they do not and your pet just happens to pick up there items because they are too close to you, then it's just an accident, and any good mannered person would give what ever loot was accidentally taken back to the owner.
you can only get banned if you purposely, like say if i just aoe a load of monsters and after they were all killed and dropped items, someone would come over with there pet and take all my items, along those actions, then the person would get banned or least warned about it, it's harassment.
and i wouldn't buy a cs pet vs gpotato. it's cheaper to just buy one vs penya.
