My version of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) has recently become essentially unplayable, and I would like some opinions on whether these problems are fixable or not.

Problem 1: I will make the character slot a traditional name, like "Ryan." After I saved the game originally, it would save as a bunch of symbols (Japanese?) when I try to load it.
Problem 2: Any time my name is said in text in the game, instead of saying the symbols, the game just crashes.
Problem 3: Every unused slot in my inventory is targetable, looks like a bunch of stray pixels, and has some Japanese name when I mouse over it. When I equip it, it treats the item as a bottle, and I drink whatever it was, and the unused slot turns into a bottle (where other items should be).
Problem 4: This is a recent development as of about 30 minutes ago... When I save a game, not only does it not save the game, but it completely erases a slot. I created a new game, got the first stone, saved it and it appeared not to save at all. When I loaded another game (having already been adult Link), saved it, and restarted the console, it deleted the entire slot.

I've looked everywhere online and couldn't find any problems similar to this... so I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. My other N64 games work fine. My guess is that there is a problem with the cartridge and the transfer of information. I have cleaned out the cartridge thoroughly, and still have the issue. If anyone has any other ideas, needs more information, or knows of a place that can troubleshoot old N64 games... I would appreciate it.

I could just buy a new one.... but of course, Zelda is one of the more expensive N64 games on the market... so I'd rather save my money for law school.

Thanks!

Will donate if you get it to work and keep me from having to buy a new one.

It is dirt cheap but it looks like the cartridge is messed.

Did I say it was rare? No.... I said it's more expensive than most of the rest. I can get most off of Amazon for $1-2. Can't hardly find oot for under $15, and most are $25-30

Regardless, I've tried cleaning it like that a couple of times, still had the same problem :\

That's what I thought, but figured I'd try.

The saving bit could be related with the cartidge's battery being dead (which can be replaced), but I don't see how the other problems could be related to it. Did you use a Gameshark or something that might have screwed up data? Maybe if you take out the battery and put it back in so all saved data is completely reset it will be fixed.

I haven't used a game shark or any other device besides the expansion pack for the N64 (which it's always worked with) and a memory pack (which it's always worked with). I haven't loaned the game out to anyone either.

I read up that saving issues can be traced back to a battery problem sometimes... but I think there might be more to it than that given all the other stuff.... Appreciate the post. Any other thoughts or ideas would be appreciated
