imo, thats one of the reason the 3ds did so poorly at first (and still isnt doing that well outside of japan)
everyone who doesnt follow nintendo closely doesnt even know the 3ds is actually a next gen portable console and not an other ds iteration

i expect the same thing to happen with the wiiu

I haven't bought anything since the Wii (Really regret getting instead of xbox360 since it has alot of the games I wanted to get/play, but everyone overhyped the Wii) but I understand the difference between the ds'.
Basicly, if I wanted to play 3ds AND ds games on a better system-3ds
IF I wanted to play ds and gameboy-Reg ds
If I wanted JUST ds games (there's other besides pokemon/mario?)-dxl/dsi (w/e).
