Emailed Nintendo about this yesterday, asking if they could replace them and at what cost, and if they couldn't, what they'd suggest I should do.

I've seen videos on Youtube that show you how to do it, but I'm afraid to do it myself, since it's a game thats... priceless to me.

cartridge battery is the battery that goes in the game cartridge, when the battery goes, you cant save, and time related events wont occur because the battery also controls the internal clock..

what's the game?

yup...

by the way there is a reasonably simple way to open snes games...
just take one of those clear hexegonal shaped bic pens, and take the ink tube out of it...then just hold a lighter up to the tip of the plastic until it melts a lot of the plastic, then make the end into a sharpish point, quickly, and stab it onto the screw...hold it there tightly for like 20-30 seconds, then take it out...let it cool down and you have a homemade nintendo screw driver

If i have good memory, it's pretty easy.
Open the cartridge and change the battery lol
Bring the old one where they sell watches... the guy will know which model it is
and he will replace it... i've done that with my Super Mario World... it will cost like 5-10 bucks.
