Already have Evasion +1 and Guard +1 and I can also get either Defense Up (S) or Speed Sharpening.

Defense up (S) gives me +10 def and DOES stack with defensive up from food skills (which I occasionally use when both are fresh).

I was kind of thinking I'd keep my Def(S) for now, and switch to speed sharpening when 10 defense won't make as big a difference. But by that time I'll also have access to upgrade Evasion or Guard to +2, while keeping the other at +1.

Any advice on things I should consider now and in the near future would be GREATLY appreciated! As well as just things regarding skill and gameplay with those skills when using the Lance.

defense is almost worthless

I kinda assumed defense was next to worthless, but it does bring me to over 110, which, around my level is crazy good I think.

How much of a difference does the speed sharpening really make? B/c it would be nice to not have to leave the area to sharpen.

Yeh. Working on that now. But my new lance has over double the sharpness of the previous so it's fine.

But, I have another one! Guard +2 and Evasion +1 or Guard +1 and Evasion +2?

Also, when is Guard Boost really useful? I figured out I can get Guard Boost as well as Guard +1 and Evasion +2 with a 2 slot weapon, so I'd be able to switch it on when / if I need it for certain bosses.

guard boost is worthless

you can block like 1-2 more attacks, but if you can't avoid those you suck anyway...

I prefer guard+2 and evasion +1 as you can still dodge pretty much anything with just +1 evasion, and just block it if you're too late

there's very little difference between evasion+1/+2 though

try them both and see what fits you

I'm sure I will but I think you answered what I was really trying to ask, which was something along the lines of what has a bigger difference between +1 and +2 versions, guard or evasion. I have heard guard +2 is >> than guard +1, but wasn't sure if evasion was even more so.

Thank you for all your help. I'm just getting to the point where I completely understand the Lance and how to use it really well. (Can solo Barroth in ~15 min without taking damage! -with my noob items ) So all this is pretty exciting. I'm even considering writing an Introduction to Lance guide for the complete newbs to it since I'm just getting out of that stage and it's all still fresh in my mind.

i believe (not 100% sure though);

No Evasion = like 1-2 frames invulnerability
Evasion +1 = 8 frames invulnerability
Evasion +2 = 10 frames invulnerability
