The latest firmware lets your Wii force an update, and these updates remove Homebrew stuff.

Time to not update my Wii, ever.

you can use custom updates though.

Yeah im pretty sure there are custom updates to counteract the official updates making sure you can still play new games that try and force an update when you play them. Either there are custom updates or it disables forced updates.
