Are online monster more difficult? Does the max group size effect monster str and life? Why does my single player gear suck so much balls online?! >:(

Monsters online are more difficult in the sense that they have more health and do more damage. I'm fairly certain this is determined strictly by online vs offline and by the size of the monster (larger version of the same monster will have more life, etc).

As for gear, defense should always be the least of your worries. Get sets (or mix sets) depending on what type of Blademaster you are for specific skills that enhance that weapon's strong points. If you just keep the armor upgraded a fair amount compared to where you are, you should be able to take ~3 hits before needing to heal, depending on the monster and your gear of course. Majority of the game is just learning the monster and it's tells so you DON'T get hit.

I dont rly think they do alot more damage but they def have alot more life. When do you start getting the + items? Hr 31+ or is it just random? Lmk if anyones down to do some arena stuff since my hr is so low i have to do all the lame 1 star quests before i do anything else at least i can do those.

And yes, some High Rank or Elite items will become obtainable when you reach level 31, but don't expect the good ones until you're level 51. But don't fret on this, there are TONS of great LR armors, you just need to find ones that specialize on skills that will help your weapon and play style the most.

.... also, don't worry when using any type of armor spheres, they all become very obtainable when you reach the volcano.

I wouldn't completely agree on this, but mostly just for the gap between LR and HR armor. The defense gap is so great (100, more or less) that the loss of your skills is nothing compared to the survivability you gain. So many people hang onto LR armor for the skills, and wonder why they are getting destroyed in HR quests.

I think what you were referring to is if the defense gap is only about ~10, in which case, feel free to swap around as much as you want, since you won't be seeing much of a change in survivability. Anything more than that, I'd take defense over skills, personally.

This, of course, is only for melee. As a gunner, you should not be taking many, or any, hits at all. Feel free to grab whatever skills you want, but again, do not ever neglect the defense gap between LR and HR, you WILL die.

I agree. Your best low rank armor is pretty much worthless against the heavy hitters once you are high rank.

In my opinion forging a large amount of low rank armors is pointless and a waste of materials that you'll need to make the high rank version of the set as well as more advanced weapons.

Regarding skills I prefer to choose my armor set based on the skills it offers then use my talisman plus my armors sockets to add what skills I want. I personally prefer a high defense armor with a large amount of sockets which is why I mainly use jhen + armor. I'm more of a brawler so I usually just socket for attack+ large.

Vouch, this guy gets down with the dirt. My main hunting partner and I agree with what he said here. Alot if ppl want the kickass skills which is cool and all but you gotta be able to stay alive for them skills to be useful.

Well, if you're focused on skills as I said in the previous post, you'll be using a Lv*** LR armor that's fully upgraded (30-32 def per item) since you have easy access to reg/+/adv Spheres, during the Lv**** quests you do have access to some HR armors, but since you can't yet get hvy or hrd spheres the defense difference will NOT be worth the loss of skills. Once you reach Lv***** quests and DO have access to these spheres, you should be switching to the + form of your armor anyways because of the better skills, OR, if the skills on the LR version are better, you can simply use the special LR upgrade to get it to have HR equivalent def.

Therefore, theres never really a point in which you need to worry about def, if you just focus on skills that are decent you shouldn't ever have much more than 5~15 def difference the armor with skills that help your weapon and ones with skills that don't help but have a high def. With the occasional exception of course.

Although, for players who use items such as the Long Sword which doesn't really have any attribute that is greatly enhanced by skills, and who do get hit fairly often, the fairly small def upgrade might make a bigger difference to them. But if I'm at Lv**** quests and using a Great Sword, I'd MUCH rather have Crit Draw and Evasion +1 then a 5~15 more def, or if I was a counter Lancer (which I am :p) I'd definitely rather have Guard +2 from a LR armor all through the Lv**** quests and get the armor+ with even better skills when I reach Lv***** quests.

tl;dr: Although skills and defense might have difference values to different weapons and play styles, generally you don't need to worry about def since the skills will be available by the time the gap gets too large.

Edit: I do apologize if I'm somewhat biased due to the face that I main Lance and Bowgun, and with Guard +2 on Lance and Evasion +1 on Bowgun, getting hit twice in one match is a bad run for me. :p But I still feel there's hardly a point where you'd have to choose between weapon enhancing skills and defense the way the game and upgrades are set up.

Again, I slightly disagree, but then again, lance is the ONLY weapon I don't use :P

And, even without an upgrade, the worst HR armor set has about a 50 defense gap over a fully upgraded LR set. Thats the biggest upgrade you can ever expect in this game.

Also, the underlined portion is not true of most weapons sadly. Lance is one of the only 2 weapons that does not rely heavily on defense to survive (the other being bowgun).

By the time you get to the sets with better skills (lagi, rathalos, etc.), you will be dying in 1 hit from just about any attack against a HR monster. Other weapons don't block full damage like the lance, and weapons like hammer, LS, and switch axe are just plain too risky to go up against any tough monster without a good defense. If you are playing one of those weapons, you go into a hunt expecting to get knocked down a few dozen times. For GS and SnS, you CAN block the damage you take, but SnS lacks the ability to block heavier attacks (which will lead to an instant death without high defense), and GS is ineffective at blocking successive attacks, also relying on defense.

Furthermore, even as a bowgunner, I wouldn't risk the LR to HR gap just for evasion. Sure, with evasion, you are much less likely to be hit, but instead of requiring good reflexes to survive, you are now requiring perfection, for without that defense boost, you are looking at an instant death, even against the weaker monsters.

All in all, its just a giant balancing act, but the LR to HR gap is the only point I believe that trashes the whole balance altogether, and the only point I believe that skills should be utterly forsaken for defense.

The worst HR set has 26 def per piece, which is lower than the 32 def on upgraded LR sets. :p Also, the BEST def HR set you can get at Lv**** HR set is Gobul+ / Rathian+ which have 50 def per piece... which I guess is a larger gap than I expected, but still not overly large. Though, like I said before I'm probably biased due to my mains, and I'd probably agree it's worth switching for LS, SA, SnS, and possibly GS if you have a nice Crit Draw taly (if you don't I'd mix upgraded Diablos with a nice HR set; but I feel like Evasion +1 / Focus for hammers is good enough for me to live and play well, since it's pretty easy to get out of the way most of the time from what I've used of them (which isn't overly much), and of course, Guard +2 on a good counter Lancer is pretty much God, and Evasion +1 is enough for a decent Bowgun (unless you're using a HBG) since it's really easy to get away afterward. And as for evasion, the +1 makes a RIDICULOUS difference, effectively quadrupling the invincibility frames from the standard evasion (from 2 frames to 8!), I'd never bowgun without it personally. :p

Either way, this was a fun discussion. ^_^

I agree , I mainly use a mix of longsword and greatsword so by the time I hit the Double trouble urgent quest I found my best low rank set was nothing short of a liability. I would agree that it depends on your play style. I tend to be a very aggressive hunter so I take plenty of hits which makes high defense a must for me personally. That is the fun thing about this game though tailoring your skills and armor to meet your play style is my favorite part of the series.
