Tilts are "A" moves or normals, they're done by pressing A (or which ever button your normals are set to) + inputing slightly and slowly in a direction with the joystick

Smash attacks also work using "A" + a direction but they require simultaneous and faster inputs with the joystick

Tilts are usually faster than smash's but weaker, making them a good option in close combat
Jabs ("A" without input of the joystick) usually being even faster and weaker are good to but they will lose to most strong attacks

Well if you have time to jab them then sure, but if they have time to start their smash attack then a tilt will likely clash with the smash, where a jab would be beaten by the smash

And after your tilt clashed with the smash, you'll likely have a lot more time to follow up with whatever you want, while they're stuck in the end lag of their smash attack
