I started w great sword. Seems to be a beginner, and a general all around good weapon. Long sword is prob pretty similar.

not looking for easiest, most fun, most potential.

how is the charge blade/axe or the gunlance?

Never used. Just now trying diff weapons. The first caravan quests allow you to fight great jaggi with whatever weapon you choose. Prob a good place to start. Everyone loves a good hunting horn user BTW.

Just getting into dual blades. Quite fun. My main has been a GS. Slow but powerful.

does hunting horn do ANY dmg doe?

Yeah. If you attack with it.you'll see a lot of HH users stay back and just play notes. You gotta get in there and attack while comboing into songs. Best position is prob between the legs. Tho I'm no expert.

ig/cb/gs break the game in general

hbg breaks the game in groups

sns/ds/lbg for status support in groups

everything else is just for funsies

I can recommend CB. Done over 600 quests with it. It is perfect to: destroy parts, Knock out and with status: para or sleep the monster (beside its extremly nuke)

IG is tricky how to feed up your kinsect

EDIT: Nothing is funnier as to do an "ultra-burst" on a monsters head
