I'd aim for having a decent rare 7 set at least for G rank that is upgraded to near/around 100 def per piece, I managed to get through most of G rank with mostly rare 7 pieces (early on i got my chest upgraded to a g rank and in G3 i upgraded 2 more pieces), but I do consider myself fairly good as well
but ya in G rank stuff can hit you quite hard, Brute Tigrex roars were 60-80% of my HP when they managed to hit me, not to mention the G3 stuff being quite strong

depends on what you like really, i used a mixed set to get myself HG earplugs, windproof (hi), sharpness +1, and got negate stun from my talisman
and i didn't really look beyond that set :S

i only have Lo atm (cause my armour is providing +12 alone) with my latest setup as i switched out for divine blessing cause i literally can't find anything else I can slot in for those 5 slots that would be useful to me atm
and I get negate stun from just 1 slot since my talisman is a 3 slot with 13 stun, by far my best 3 slot atm
