tell me how bland it is
played a little bit (I want to take it easy for now because I'm going to go on vacation next week, and that includes a ~12 hour flight), so far it's fun but very easy.
I'm in world 2 right now, I've only died 3 times, and two of them were while experimenting... I expect the difficulty will increase like in SM3DL. The only challenge so far has been finding some of the star coins, but most of them are pretty hard to miss.
But I am having fun so far, if you like Mario games, you'll like this one.
Spoilers:
All the enemies so far are from the NES/SNES era; I'd say visually the game is most similar to SMB3, but the bosses and the way fortresses/castles and most levels are set up is most similar to SMW (at least for now). To save you have to beat a fortress/castle like in the original SMW aswell. From a musial point of view it's very close to SM3DL. There are references to other games too, I've encountered a couple of doors that lead you to a reversed world like in Doki Doki Panic, for example. For now I'd say it's 50% SMW, 35% SMB3, 10% other Mario games (manily SM3DL and SMB1), 5% new stuff.
As for the coins, there are many, but fortunately it's not the coin frenzy I expected after watching the trailer, at least for now.
Oh, and Peach gets kidnapped
