When ur in first
always hold onto a mushroom
When sum1 shoots u with the blue shell
as soon as it does its down thrust
slam the mushroom

but you dont get many mushrooms when you're first, you get a ton of bananas and green shells though and you can hold Y or L to keep them behind you
it protects you from red/green shells and fireballs and those are very common to recieve in 1st place!
