it really depends on who is playing as them some people are very good with a few and some are very good with a lot...i dont know how this teir was made but this was certainly not made by everyone that plays so it cant really rank how good or bad a character is.

It was made by everyone who is good.
Some people are good with certain characters, yes.
But here's the thing
You could be really good with Ganondorf. But if there's a decent metaknight, he would probably beat you. Because he's higher on the tier list, and the matchup is in his favor. Also, a higher tier character generally can get better than you, while lower tiers only can get so good.

This IS an open discussion. Share your opinions, it's more than welcome. I just like to share mine, aswell.

Tiers = HOW GOOD A CHARACTER IS. That doesn't mean someone can't take a D tier char and facefuck someone using an SS char.

My opinion on tiers is that it's just a bunch of fat kids being judgemental, being as the ssbm one constantly changed. (lol remember jiggly top tier anyone? I do)

Characters on Melee (and brawl) were changing because their metagame was advancing. People were finding new techniques constantly.
And you're totally right, it IS possible to beat someone with lower tiers. It shouldn't be an obstacle if you want to use one. It's just, at the same skill level, they are more likely to win than you are. But that should determine you, not cause you to give up and pick a higher-tiered character.

How can you determine which char is better than another char?

That's a good question.
So far, it's been done by mostly tournament results.
There is a big thread on smashboards.com that keeps track of any major brawl tournaments and results. The results of a character are put up on the chart, and you see where a certain character tends to place in tournaments, who he loses to, etc.
And secondly, just how good they are in general.
And their matchups, how they do vs. another character. One of the reasons MK is the best is because he has no bad matchups. He goes even or better with everyone. The best way to beat an MK is to be an MK.

I see. That makes sense. If the data is there.. its there. I havent actually been to the smashboard but if there is hundreds of matches and the outcomes are pretty consistant with equal skilled players. I could see where you could get your tiers.

i completely understand how tier lists work, and the reason i argue against them is....

1. they are not official
2. they are the result of PLAYERS winning with their FAVORITE character
3. they are always subject to change...

your gannon VS metaknight isent really good

you put two fighters in ring, one strong and can take a lot of hits, the other fast and agil, high in endurance, but cannot take many hits..

who will win? its ALWAYS a debate.

Saying one character is better is NOT justifiable unless the game was CREATED with greater or lesser characters

1. They are official.
2. Yeah.. and? That's all the results you need. It determines which character is better than another, who they lose to, etc.
3. Yes. They are, because people are CONSTANTLY finding new techniques for characters.

Your scenario isn't good. The match is determined by A LOT more than if they're heavy or fast.
Metaknight can gimp Ganondorf. All metaknight needs is his super-fast dsmash to get him off stage, then some d-airs to hit him far enough so he can't recover. It doesn't matter if metaknight "can't take many hits" Since he basically has the best recovery in the game.
Fighting games are NEVER balanced. There is NO possible way to make a fighting game balanced unless every character was the EXACT same.
