Yeah definitely. I've completed the game 4 or 5 times because of that (and enjoyed every playthrough).
I would personally say to get Tales of Symphonia too. It's a great game and I have had many hours of enjoyment from it. The game uses a real-time battle system, which makes it a lot more fun (it plays a bit like Smash Bros). There are plenty of sidequests and other things to do. The story is very good IMO (there are a few twists and turns). My only complaint would be that some of the characters seem like they're aimed at young teenagers (their voice acting can be a bit over-the-top and some of their lines are a bit cheesy). It's not really that big of a downfall since the overall game is so great though.
That's not to say that the Fire Emblem games aren't great too. I love them too. You're getting both eventually though, so it doesn't really matter anyway.
