At the start of the 8th gen, a lot of what Microsoft went for was too soon, people weren't ready to change yet.
So Sony had that gen all to themselves.
Selling boxes that you put a Blu-ray into to play a game.
Quite a lot of those features were dropped by Xbox and the slowly reintroduced over the 8th gen.

Now, come the 9th gen, Sony is still selling a box that you put Blu-rays into to play games.

But now, rather than looking focused and lean, they're looking old fashioned, out of touch.

Xbox has seized control of the power narrative, the market narrative and the platform narrative.

Now Sony is playing catch up and, looking back at the 8th gen, it took Microsoft 4 years, at the very least, to get back up and in the ring.

And it wasn't just time necessary, Xbox had the entire force of Microsoft behind them to write the software and provide services like Azure. Sony doesn't have that, they are a consumer electronics company.

Xbox has sold 6.7mil series x and s collectively by sept 2021. PS5 has sold 13.3mil consoles, nearly double. Sorry no, Xbox is not on the same level or in the game like PS5, so far during the first year post launch sony has taken the crown again. Now the big exclusive pushes haven't hit yet it'll be interesting to see once Horizon and GoW release. But so far Sony has taken the cake. Games like Returnal / Ghost of Tsusihma have been big hits for Sony and I don't see the exclusive battle ending any time soon.

Why would it matter though

Xbox will be competitive when Bethesda will start releasing its exclusives atm ps5 is winning by far. Anf I have both ps5 and series x. Since I have ps5 I play mainly on it just enter games and headset is amazing.

The ONLY thing Microsoft did right was grab Bethesda and Obsidian. In response expect Sony to counter with grabbing ANY Disney associated content. Marvel, Star Wars and such. I’ve heard rumors about agreements being in the works and it makes sense because Disney and Sony have a pretty friendly professional situation.
