Hey, so I just got my Seagate 2TB plus slim external HDD in the mail today.
I plugged in the HDD and i'm now backing up my entire stock hard drive onto the external.
When it's done, I can pop open the external to get the drive out, then swap it for my PS4 internal HDD, restore using the hard drive thats in the PS4, it will work right?

Why didn't you get a new internal drive

Because this one was on sale $90, regularly $180.
And the reviews saying it works perfect for ps4.

I've only ever upgraded my ps3s hard drive
Bought external for backup and internal to swap
If I did it now for ps4, I would just buy an internal
I don't really care for the back up thing anymore
All I need is a few game saves and that barely takes up any space
I could just upload that stuff to the cloud and redownload it

Are all my save files stored online? If my ps4 crashed and was totally done could I buy a new ps4, sign in and have all my progress?

I uploaded all my save files that i wanted onto ps plus cloud, it gives you like 10gb free for save files that can be uploaded and restored all using the cloud features.
So yes, if your ps4 crashes and you had all your save files stored onto PS Plus Cloud, then you could restore them using a new ps4, however you'd have to download the game files all over again but your saved files will be there

The game isn't the important part
Redownloading a game is easy and takes no real effort
The progress you've made is what's essential
Therefore, storing your games progress to the cloud is easier and more cost effective than getting a bigger hdd
Having a bigger hard drive just allows you to have more things
But if you finished games and don't play them anymore, there's no real need to keep them, delete them and you'll have more space, just keep your game saves, you can always redownload the game again later on and pick up where you left off before
That's just my input, I thought about getting a bigger hard drive but I don't have the need to keep stuff I've finished anymore and have no real interest picking it back up, but if I do, I still have all my game saves..just in case I change my mind

I'm getting pushed to the brink when it comes to mine. I play a variety of different games, so it's becoming a real nuisance having to keep deleting game files, some games that I've deleted in the past i want to play again and its a hassle reinstalling/redownloading, downloading all the patches again, etc.
500gb just aint enough for me personally, and 90 bucks for a 2TB hard drive was just way too hard to pass on.

Is the external drive an enclosure for 2.5" drive?

Otherwise, you can't pop open external drives.

Also, you can't do it that way anyways and save your data. Any time you disconnect a drive and connect it again it will need to be formatted and all data will be erased.
